The Most Important Points at a Glance:

  • Reconnecting AirPods takes 1–3 minutes — with the same Apple ID, it is often fully automatic via iCloud
  • Older models (AirPods 1–3, Pro 1–2): Hold the setup button on the back of the charging case for 5 seconds until the LED flashes white
  • Newer models (AirPods 4, Pro 3): Double-tapping the front of the case activates pairing mode
  • For stubborn problems: Complete reset — the LED first flashes yellow-orange, then white

Quick solutions in 3 minutes

Reconnecting AirPods is not rocket science. In most cases, you can do it in 1–3 minutes. The key question: Which AirPods model do you have?

With AirPods 1, 2, 3 as well as AirPods Pro 1 and 2 you activate pairing mode by pressing and holding the setup button on the back of the charging case for about 5 seconds. As soon as the LED status indicator flashes white, your AirPods are ready to connect.

With the AirPods 4 (both variants) and AirPods Pro 3 Apple has removed the setup button. Instead, double-tap the front of the case to start pairing mode.

If the connection still doesn’t work, a complete reset helps. This takes about 5 minutes and restores your AirPods to factory settings. You can tell by the LED color change: first yellow, then white.

Reconnecting AirPods vs. resetting: What’s the difference?

Before you get started, you should understand what you actually want to achieve. Because "reconnecting" and "resetting" are two completely different processes.

When reconnecting, you pair your AirPods with a device. All your personal settings — such as volume, Siri configuration, or settings for automatic ear detection — are retained. The Bluetooth pairing is simply established with a new or existing device.

A reset deletes all stored data and restores the factory settings. Your AirPods "forget" all paired devices, and iCloud synchronization is disabled.

Connect AirPods to iPhone: Instructions for all models

Connecting to the iPhone is the most common use case. Thanks to iCloud synchronization, this is especially easy on Apple devices — provided you use the same Apple ID.

Automatic connection (recommended)

The fastest method only works if your iPhone is signed in with the same Apple ID as your previous Apple devices.

  1. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your iPhone.
  2. Open the charging case of your AirPods (leave the AirPods in the case).
  3. Hold the case next to your iPhone — no more than a few centimeters away.
  4. The setup animation will appear automatically on the display.
  5. Tap "Connect" and follow the instructions.

That’s it. Your AirPods are now paired with your iPhone and will automatically transfer to all other Apple devices linked to the same Apple ID.

Expert tip

Automatic connection only works if both devices (iPhone and the previously paired AirPods) are set up with the same Apple ID and two-factor authentication enabled.

Another option is the manual Bluetooth connection. No animation appears? Then use manual pairing via the Bluetooth settings.

  1. Open "Settings" > "Bluetooth" on your iPhone.
  2. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled.
  3. Place both AirPods in the charging case and open the lid.
  4. For AirPods 1–3 and Pro 1–2: Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 5 seconds until the LED flashes white.
  5. For AirPods 4 and Pro 3: Double-tap the front of the case until the LED flashes white.
  6. Wait until your AirPods appear in the Bluetooth device list.
  7. Tap the name of your AirPods to connect.

The connection is confirmed once "Connected" appears under the AirPods name.

Connect AirPods to other devices

AirPods don’t only work with the iPhone. You can pair them with practically any Bluetooth-enabled device — although there are limitations with non-Apple devices.

Connect AirPods to Android

Yes, AirPods also work with Android smartphones. They behave like standard Bluetooth headphones and can be paired with any device that supports Bluetooth 4.0 or higher.

  1. Open the Bluetooth settings on your Android device.
  2. Enable Bluetooth and start searching for new devices.
  3. Place both AirPods in the case and open the lid.
  4. Put the AirPods into pairing mode (hold the setup button or double-tap, depending on the model).
  5. Select your AirPods from the device list.

Connect AirPods to Mac

On Macs signed in with the same Apple ID, your AirPods appear automatically — provided you have already paired them with another Apple device.

For automatic connection, open Control Center (icon at the top right) or click the speaker icon in the menu bar. Your AirPods should be selectable there as the audio output.

To connect your AirPods manually, open "System Settings" and go to "Bluetooth". Then put your AirPods into pairing mode, select them from the list, and click "Connect".

AirPods 2, 3, 4, as well as all AirPods Pro models, support automatic device switching — so you don’t need to switch manually when moving from iPhone to Mac.

Connect AirPods to a Windows PC

AirPods work on Windows 10 and Windows 11 as standard Bluetooth devices.

  1. Open "Settings" > "Devices" > "Bluetooth and other devices" (Windows 10) or "Settings" > "Bluetooth and devices" (Windows 11).
  2. Turn on Bluetooth and click "Add device".
  3. Select "Bluetooth" as the device type.
  4. Put your AirPods into pairing mode.
  5. Select your AirPods from the list of found devices.

Important info: On Windows, Apple features such as automatic ear detection or seamless switching are missing. The AirPods work as standard Bluetooth headphones with basic functions.

Connect AirPods to Apple TV

On Apple TVs set up with the same Apple ID, already paired AirPods appear automatically as an audio option. You can find them in the audio menu during playback.

  1. Open "Settings" on your Apple TV.
  2. Go to "Remotes and Devices" > "Bluetooth".
  3. Put your AirPods into pairing mode.
  4. Select your AirPods from the list that appears.

AirPods won’t connect? Causes and solutions

Despite all your efforts, your AirPods still won’t connect? Don’t panic. Most problems can be solved with systematic troubleshooting.

The easiest fix first: Is Bluetooth even on? Open Control Center (swipe down from the top right). Check whether the Bluetooth icon is blue. Tap the icon once to turn Bluetooth off. Wait 10 seconds and turn Bluetooth back on.

Does that not help? Restart your iPhone completely. A restart fixes many temporary software issues.

Alternative trick: Briefly enable Airplane Mode and then disable it again. This resets all wireless connections.

Another commonly overlooked cause: dead batteries. AirPods with an empty battery cannot establish a Bluetooth connection. Place both AirPods in the charging case and open the lid next to your iPhone. The charge level will be shown in the Batteries widget or as a popup. For a reliable connection, both the AirPods and the case should have at least 10% battery. Charge them before connecting if necessary.

Outdated software can cause connection problems. After the iOS 18 update, many users reported AirPods issues – these were only fixed with iOS 18.2.1.

To do this, simply open Settings and go to "General", then "Software Update", and install any available updates.

Häufige Fragen

What is the difference between Reconnect and Reset?

When you reconnect, all settings are retained - you only pair the AirPods with a (new) device. A reset completely deletes all connections and settings and returns the AirPods to their factory state.

How do I connect AirPods to Android, Mac or Windows?

Put AirPods into pairing mode (setup button until LED flashes white), then select it in the Bluetooth settings of the respective device. Some Apple features (Siri, automatic switching) are not available on Android/Windows.
