Why won’t my AirPods or my case charge?

Why won’t the charging case charge

If your AirPods or the charging case won’t charge, there can be various causes. Here are the most common reasons and suitable solutions:

  1. Dirty contacts: Dirt, lint, or deposits on the charging pins in the case or on the AirPods often prevent contact. → Cleaning tips: Use a dry cotton swab, a soft microfiber cloth, or carefully compressed air to clean the contacts.

  2. Defective or unsuitable charging cable: Not every cable works reliably, especially with third-party accessories. → Test another cable (ideally an original Apple one) and another charging adapter or USB port.

  3. Faulty power source: Sometimes the cable is not the problem, but the power outlet or USB port. → Test another power source, e.g. directly on the Mac or with another power adapter.

  4. AirPods are not sitting properly in the case: If the AirPods do not click into place exactly, they do not make contact with the charging connector. → Press them down gently or check whether there are foreign objects in the charging case.

  5. Software bug or crash: In rare cases, it can help to reset the AirPods or pair them again. → Hold the setup button on the case for about 15 seconds until the LED flashes (for a reset). Then pair with the iPhone again.

  6. Faulty battery or hardware issue: If nothing helps at all (e.g. no LED when charging), the battery itself may be damaged, for example due to age, moisture or a drop. → In this case: contact Apple Support. Check your warranty or AppleCare status first.

  7. Optimized charging can make charging seem slow: From AirPods 3 and Pro 2 onward, when the feature is enabled, charging is automatically slowed at around 80% to protect the battery. → In Settings > Bluetooth > [AirPods], you can disable this feature for testing if you need a full charge right away.

7 tips for longer battery life for your AirPods

Beautiful woman with AirPods

How to get the most out of the battery and charging cycles of your AirPods – regardless of the model:

  1. Keep optimized charging enabled: This feature reduces battery wear by keeping the charge level at around 80% for longer and only charging to 100% shortly before use.

  2. Store AirPods in the case regularly: Between uses, the AirPods belong back in the case – this keeps them protected and ready to use without being deeply discharged.

  3. Do not keep them at 100% all the time: Avoid leaving the AirPods on the charger for hours when they are already full. Automatic charging management helps, but disconnecting them consciously provides additional protection.

  4. Frequent partial charges instead of 0-100%: Lithium-ion batteries do not like deep discharge. Better: charge briefly more often instead of letting them run completely empty and then fully recharge them.

  5. Avoid extreme temperatures: High heat (e.g. in a car in the sun) or frost can permanently damage the battery. Store and charge AirPods at room temperature whenever possible.

  6. Use ANC and 3D audio selectively: Features such as Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) or 3D Audio consume more power. Turn them on only when needed.

  7. Disconnect or deactivate unused AirPods: If you do not use your AirPods for a long period, disconnect them from the iPhone or deactivate “Find My” to reduce standby power consumption.

If your AirPods or a single AirPod no longer charges sufficiently

Sometimes the problem is not just the charging case or the cable, but one of the AirPods itself. If a single AirPod no longer charges reliably, won’t connect, or its battery drains unusually quickly, a replacement can make more sense than buying a complete new set.

Apple does not normally offer individual parts, only complete sets or sometimes paid repairs (depending on warranty status).

We at OneEarPod take a different approach:

  • We buy original AirPods directly from the manufacturer

  • Disassemble them professionally into individual parts

  • And offer you single original AirPods or charging cases for purchase

  • Including warranty and significantly cheaper than buying a complete new set

Here you can find single AirPods for all models.
