A replacement AirPod or case must match your existing generation and version. During setup, both earbuds are brought together in the case and then paired with your iPhone or iPad. The action you take on the case depends on the model.
What to check before setup
- Compare the model numbers of your AirPods and case.
- For AirPods 4, check whether you have the version with or without ANC.
- Use the instructions for your case's controls.
- Have your iPhone or iPad and a power source ready.
Set up replacement AirPods or a charging case
The following steps summarise Apple's replacement AirPods instructions.
- Place both earbuds in the compatible case. Connect it to power, close the lid and wait 20 minutes.
- Open the case. If the light is already flashing white, go to step 4. Otherwise, use the appropriate method below.
- After following the relevant method, wait for the light to flash white.
- Close the case. If an AirPods entry already appears under Bluetooth on your iPhone or iPad, tap the information button and choose Forget This Device.
- Open the case near your device, go to the Home Screen and confirm the setup prompt by tapping Connect and Done.
AirPods 1, 2, 3 and AirPods Pro 1, 2
With the lid open, hold the setup button on the back for 15 seconds. The light should flash amber, then white.
AirPods 4, 5 and AirPods Pro 3
Double-tap the front of the case while the light is on. Double-tap again when it flashes white, then a third time when it flashes faster. The light should then flash amber and finally white.
If the replacement will not connect
First, check that both earbuds are charging and that the models are compatible. One unsuccessful attempt does not prove that a part is faulty. Avoid combining different generations at random.
If your device displays AirPods Mismatch or an account-related message, follow Apple's help for mismatched AirPods. Used devices may still be linked to the previous owner's Apple Account. Contact the seller rather than ignoring the message.
