The size of Apple AirPods is very practical for the user. They're easy to stow in a jacket pocket or handbag. Unfortunately, their size is also the reason why single earbuds or even a whole bundle keep going missing. If you're currently facing the challenge of searching for your AirPods, be sure to read on.
We'll tell you what tools there are for locating your AirPods and how you can use these features. For this, however, you need to have set something up after purchase or before the loss. If, despite all your efforts, your AirPods stay lost, we'll tell you where you can reorder single parts as replacements.
Here's how to find your AirPods!
The smaller the object, the harder the search when it's lost. Unfortunately, Apple's AirPods are very small, and so they often stay lost.
Fortunately, the developers of the earbuds took this into account and built in a technical way to locate AirPods. If you've lost one or both AirPods, you can use two different search methods to find them.

Requirements for the search
To be able to find your headphones, the following requirements must be met:
- You must have turned on the “Find My iPhone” service.
- A search is only possible if the headphones aren't in the charging case.
- The devices must be within range of your iPhone and connected via Bluetooth.
- You must have an iCloud account.
Only if the points above are met can you locate your AirPods and have them shown on a map. In all other cases, you can only see the last location where the earbuds were used.
Finding AirPods on a map
The first search method you should always use is searching on a map. Since you probably won't be sure where you lost your AirPods, you can use it to see either their current location or at least their last location.
If you've left your headphones at a friend's place or at school, you'll find that out very quickly with the map search. As a first step, it lets you narrow down the place to search for your AirPods very well. If you don't find them there, you can turn to the second method for finding AirPods.
Finding AirPods with a sound
If your AirPods are active, you can reach them via the “Find My iPhone” feature. A signal tone then plays for two minutes, getting louder and louder. That way you should find the earbud even in the gap between sofa cushions or under the bedside table.
If you haven't found it within the two minutes, you can of course repeat the signal tone as often as you like. Even if you've initially only found the left or right AirPod, you can start the signal tone again.
Turn on notifications for forgotten AirPods
The crucial requirement is that you've turned on the search for lost AirPods. You can also use Apple's “Find My” app for this, which you can install additionally. With this app, you can see the current or last location of your Apple devices.
This doesn't just help when searching for AirPods, but also when you've misplaced your iPod or iPad. If you haven't activated this search feature yet, you should do so right away and make all your Apple devices trackable.
Reasons why the search might be unsuccessful
If the headphones' battery is empty, you can't locate them. If they're in their charging case , the AirPods don't send a location signal. Since they're stored in the place intended for them, the earbuds believe everything is fine. Unfortunately, Apple didn't provide a way to locate the charging case.
If they're out of Bluetooth range, AirPods can't be searched for via the map. So you can't rely on always being able to locate your lost headphones anywhere.
