Find the right single AirPod

Losing a valuable or much-loved item is very annoying. That also applies if you've lost an AirPod. Don't worry, you're far from the only one this mishap has happened to. Unfortunately, people keep finding themselves asking: what to do if you've lost an AirPod?

With this article, we want to give you the chance to find your AirPod again. Fortunately, Apple has a feature that can help you search. Later on, we'll tell you how to use this help and what else you can do if you can't find your AirPods.

What to do if you've lost an AirPod?

Your top priority will of course be to find a lost AirPod again. The first thing you should do if you've lost an AirPod is think about when and where you last used or saw it. That can be an important clue as to where you lost it.

Where do you usually put your earphones when you're not using them? That should be the first place you look for a lost AirPod. With a bit of luck, you'll find it right there with little effort, because it has simply slipped out of the charging case by accident.

If this manual search isn't successful, you can turn to Apple's technical search feature . It can show you where your AirPod is or make it draw attention to itself with a sound.

Apple has also recognized that AirPods can easily get lost because of their size. That's why the “Find My” feature was developed, which can help you search for a lost AirPod.

To be able to use it, you first have to turn on this valuable feature, as it isn't a default setting. You can activate it in a few simple steps.

  1. Open the Settings app on your playback device.
  2. First select your name and then “Find My”.
  3. Click “Find My Device” and then turn on “Find My Device”.
  4. Now all you have to do is turn on the “Find My” network.

Once you've made these settings, the first step in future if you've lost an AirPod will be to use the “Find My” search.

Search for your AirPod's location

First, we want to explain how to display the location when you want to search for a lost AirPod. It's very convenient. If your AirPods are still connected to the playback device via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, you'll see the current location. If there's no longer a connection, the last known location is shown.

Both types of location information give you a clue about what to do if you've lost an AirPod. They narrow down the search radius, and you may find out that you lost the AirPod while visiting a friend and don't need to search at home at all.

Step by step to the location

We first recommend updating to the latest version of your operating system. Once you've done that, please open the “Find My” app.

Next, you need to select the “Devices” tab. Here you need to select the AirPods you've lost.

For each device, either the location where it is or where it was last located is shown. If no data is available, you'll see the message “No location found” here.

Your AirPods can make themselves heard

There's another service from Apple, which can help you with the question of what to do if you've lost an AirPod. It doesn't show you where your AirPod is, but makes it draw attention to itself with a sound.

This is a big help especially if your search at the last location didn't turn anything up. Before you search every gap in the sofa for a lost AirPod, you can hear where it is.

Instructions for sound alerts for a lost AirPod

For this too, you should first check that you've installed the latest version of the operating system. If so, open the “Find My” app.

Then select “Devices” and click your AirPods in the list. Now all you have to do is click “Play Sound” for your AirPods to start playing a signal.

Over time the sound gets louder and louder, which increases your chances of finding a lost AirPod. Since the sound stops playing after two minutes, you may have to repeat the process until you find it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I locate my AirPod if it is offline or the battery is empty?
You will then only see the last known location before the connection was lost. You can only determine a current location or play a sound if the AirPod has a battery and is within Bluetooth range of an Apple device.
Can I locate the charging case myself?
Older AirPods charging cases cannot be located because they do not have their own Bluetooth connection. Only with AirPods Pro 2 (USB-C) and newer models does the charging case automatically send its location. For older models, only manual search helps.
Does the search also work with an Android smartphone?
Partially yes. Go to [iCloud.com/find](http://icloud.com/find) in your browser and sign in with your Apple ID. There, you'll see your AirPods' last location, but you won't be able to use all of the Find My app features available on iOS.
What to do if I really can't find the lost AirPod?
You don't have to buy a completely new set. At OneEarPod You can buy a single original AirPod (left or right), significantly cheaper than a new bundle and with a full manufacturer's warranty.
Can Finder simply continue to use my AirPods?
As long as they remain linked to your Apple ID and you mark them as lost in the Find My app, they are blocked from strangers. Only after a factory reset and complete unpairing from your iCloud account can they be bound to another device.
