An AirPod is quieter - here's what to do!

A volume difference is often caused by buildup, settings, or a weak connection. Check these points before replacing the quieter AirPod.

Replace the quieter AirPod

Even though Apple's in-ear headphones are valued for their outstanding sound, unfortunately it doesn't always last. A problem many users talk about is that one AirPod gets quieter over time. Today we want to explain what you can do if your AirPods have become quieter too.

There are several possible reasons why AirPods play at different volumes. You can fix most of them without much effort, because if an AirPod isn't working properly, that doesn't necessarily mean it's faulty. If you do need a replacement, you'll also find out how to order one from us without any hassle.

One AirPod is quieter than the other – what could be the cause?

Like most other electronic devices, Apple's earbuds aren't made to last forever. With ongoing use, volume problems can occur, so you get the feeling that your AirPods have become quieter. Let's look at the most common causes.

Dirty earbuds

One of the most common reasons why AirPods play at different volumes is dirt. The more often you use your AirPods, the more likely they are to get dirty. We've put together what you can do about it in a cleaning guide for AirPods. As long as you're careful, nothing can happen to your earbuds.

The balance isn't set correctly

It also happens from time to time that the volume is output at different levels on the individual earbuds. You can check this easily by putting both AirPods in your ears and connecting them to a playback device. Open the menu and go to the audio settings. There you'll find sliders to adjust the balance.

The firmware is out of date

Just like your phone, AirPods get regular firmware updates. To rule out outdated software, you should update it if your AirPods have become quieter. Sometimes it also helps to reset the devices to factory settings.

What to do if one AirPod is quieter?

Now that you know the most frequently mentioned causes of a quieter earbud, we'd like to give you an order in which you can rule out these causes. We recommend proceeding as follows:

  1. Check your earbuds for dirt. Never use water for this, and follow our cleaning guide. If you look closely, you can usually already see whether the volume is being affected by dirt.
  2. If you can rule out dirt, the second step is to check whether the balance is set correctly. Even if it is, you can try to compensate for the difference in volume by adjusting the configuration. The cause isn't fixed that way, but you no longer have a problem with one AirPod being quieter. As a rule, however, this solution doesn't last, because the technical problem causing the quieter AirPod hasn't been fixed.
  3. If step two hasn't brought any improvement either, reset the firmware and install the latest version.
  4. The last option if a single AirPod isn't working is to buy a replacement part. Feel free to get in touch with us about this.

What you can do to enjoy your earbuds for a long time

If you don't have any problems yet with AirPods playing at different volumes and want to keep it that way, careful use can help you avoid this problem.

As dirt is the most common cause of a quieter AirPod, you should pay close attention to where you put your earbuds down. They're safest when stored in their charging case whenever you're not using them. Washing your ears regularly also helps less earwax build up on the ear tips.

AirPod can't be repaired? We have a replacement!

If you've followed all our advice and one AirPod still doesn't work, your only option is to buy a replacement. Fortunately, you don't have to buy a complete new bundle for this, even though Apple itself doesn't offer individual components.

This lets you save a lot of money. A single left AirPod is of course significantly cheaper than a whole set. The environment benefits too, as fewer resources are used and less waste is produced. After all, why throw away working parts just because your AirPods play at different volumes?

We only offer original products

We're happy to tell you how we work. It's actually pretty simple. We buy original Apple AirPods ourselves. Then we split these sets into their individual parts and sell them on to our customers. That was the simplest way for us when we were looking for a solution to the lack of individual components for the earbuds. The idea came about because we ourselves, as enthusiastic users, were looking for a single earbud.

The manufacturer's warranty of course also applies to the individual parts we resell. And because we want you to be able to enjoy music again right away, we test all products for functionality once more before they leave us. So we can reassure you that you'll be spared a situation where an AirPod doesn't work.

Speed matters to us

We've experienced ourselves how annoying it is when one AirPod is quieter. That's why we've worked hard to keep all our processes as lean as possible and deliver your replacement as quickly as possible. Our online shop is deliberately kept simple. After all, you know which replacement part you're looking for and which AirPod it's for. We stock individual components for AirPods (second and third generation) as well as for the AirPod Pro.

Once you've found the right replacement part, you can pay directly via express checkout. If you prefer, you can also pay via the shopping cart. Orders ship within 24 hours, so you can be listening to music and podcasts with both ears again within a few days. There are no shipping costs, as we ship all our products free of charge.

Frequently asked questions

Why does an AirPod become quieter over time?
The most common causes are earwax or dust in the speaker grille, an adjusted stereo balance and outdated firmware. Only if none of these causes apply and even thorough cleaning does not help, there is hardware wear on the speaker.
Can I repair the quieter AirPod myself?
No. The housings are glued and cannot be opened without destroying them. Apple itself exchanges defective AirPods for refurbished devices, which is expensive without a guarantee. A single replacement AirPod is often worthwhile instead.
Does a factory reset help with a quieter AirPod?
Sometimes yes, if the cause is a software glitch or faulty Bluetooth pairing. If the AirPod still remains quieter after the reset, the problem is mechanical (dirty or hardware defect) and a reset will not help.
Do I need to buy a new set if an AirPod no longer sounds normal?
No. At OneEarPod You can buy a single original AirPod (left or right) – with a full manufacturer’s warranty. This is 40-60% cheaper than a completely new set and saves resources because the working AirPod continues to be used.
How do I stop an AirPod from becoming quieter?
Always keep the AirPods in the charging case (protects them from dust), clean them every 2-3 weeks with a soft brush, pay attention to ear hygiene and always keep AirPods and iOS up to date with the latest software.
