AirPods Case no longer charges: 5 common causes with solutions

Posted by "OneEarPod" on

Your AirPods case suddenly stops charging? That's annoying. Other users also complain about this problem from time to time. But don't worry: In this article we'll show you the most common causes and quick solutions.

Why is my AirPod charging case not charging?

There could be several reasons why your AirPods case won't charge anymore. Let's look at the reasons here. Once you've tried all the solutions, they should charge properly again.

1. Charger or cable is defective

In some cases, the charger (power connection) or the cable may be defective. This is more often the case with the cables. Check whether you have a spare charger and a spare cable at home and try charging the case with them. In many cases, this will solve the problem. If you don't have either of them at home, you can, for example, take them to aApple Go to the store and ask an employee to test it there.

2. Change the charging method for AirPods with inductive charging option

AirPods from the 2nd generation or Pro can be charged inductively. In this case, you should switch between wired charging and inductive charging to check whether the problem occurs with both options. If inductive charging works but wired charging doesn't, there is a problem with the cable. If the wired option works but inductive doesn't, there is a problem with the Qi charging pad. If both options don't work, it is probably a hardware defect.

3. Dirt on the socket of the case prevents charging

Check the socket on the charging case (where the charging cable is plugged in). You can find this on the bottom of the case. It's not uncommon for dirt to collect there. If the socket is dirty, the charging cable on the case won't connect as it should.

Therefore, carefully remove the dirt from the socket. Do not use any metal objects for this. For example, you can use a wooden toothpick and carefully insert it into the socket to loosen the dirt. You can also blow into the socket. After you have cleaned the socket, reconnect the cable and check whether it can now be charged.

While you're on the subject of cleaning: Here is a short guide how you can clean your entire charging case and your AirPods. This will extend their lifespan.

4. Update the firmware

Outdated firmware can also be a reason for charging problems. The firmware should actually update automatically. But make sure that the firmware of your AirPods is up to date. You can check this via the settings on your paired iPhone.

5th defect

If the charging case still doesn't charge despite all your attempts, it's probably defective. In this case, you should check whether the device is still under warranty and whether you can get the repair costs reimbursed or even get a replacement device.
