AirPods have different noise levels – fix the problem

Posted by "OneEarPod" on

Today we would like to deal with a problem when using the AirPods, which in most cases is not a big problem. If the AirPods are loud at different levels, there can be a variety of reasons. The good news is that most of these are relatively easy to fix.

You have noticed that an AirPod is quieter? Then take a few minutes and try to get this problem under control with our tips. You have a real chance of enjoying undisturbed music again if you have set up your AirPods correctly.

My AirPods have different levels of noise - what could be the problem?

We have identified four different reasons why AirPods can make different noises. We now want to describe these individually and then of course also tell you how you can change the status so that both headphones run at the same volume again.

Incorrect balance

Whether you set it this way consciously or unconsciously, shifting the balance causes different volumes to be played on the left and right headphones. Because this may well be desired, you have the option of making this setting. At the same time, it's of course very annoying if you didn't actually want your AirPods to have different volume levels. We'll explain to you later how you can adjust the AirPods balance.

Headphones dirty

The more intensively you use the earplugs, the more likely it is that they will become dirty. You should therefore always make sure to keep them in the charging case. There they are protected and at the same time the probability of losing a single AirPod decreases.

Problems with the software

The reason why your AirPods make different noises can also be in the software. As you are probably aware, despite constant further development, so-called bugs still creep in that can lead to malfunctions. Here too, you can set your AirPods correctly yourself to eliminate this source of error.

The hardware is defective

If you have tested and ruled out all of the causes mentioned above, then your hardware is defective. The bad news is that you can't repair the little headphones yourself. It is not possible to open the housing without destroying it. If the different AirPods volume is due to a hardware failure, then you have no choice but to buy a replacement.

What to do if AirPods have different noise levels?

After we have told you the most common causes, in the next step we want to give you a short guide on how you can fix the cause of an AirPod being quieter yourself.

Set the balance on the AirPods

If you want to check whether the balance is set correctly, follow these steps:

  1. Plug both headphones in your ears and connect them to your iPhone.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Select the menu item “Accessibility”.
  4. Next you need to click on “Audio/Visual”.
  5. Now move the slider to adjust the AirPods balance. If you can get both headphones to be the same volume again, then you have successfully solved the problem of one AirPod being quieter.

Clean AirPods properly

Although it is advisable to clean the headphones thoroughly on a regular basis, you should still clean them whenever the AirPods have different levels of noise. Remember that these are highly sensitive electronics and water and other liquids should therefore be used very sparingly. We have put together the best way to clean the individual components in these cleaning instructions.

An update for the software

You probably carry out the regular updates of the software anyway. However, something can go wrong with this update or you have missed an update.  If the AirPod volume varies, you should always check whether you have the latest software version installed. This doesn't take long and the AirPods can be set up correctly again.

Request a repair

If you are still under the manufacturer's warranty, you can of course use this to get a repair for which you will not incur any costs. Outside of warranty, you can contact both the manufacturer and service providers for repairs if an AirPod is quieter. But find out about the costs beforehand and get a cost estimate. In most cases the repair will not be economical.

AirPod cannot be repaired? We have a replacement!

If you decide against a repair or if it is not possible because a single pair of headphones is obviously seriously damaged and the AirPods are therefore loud at different levels, then you will need a replacement. That sounds banal at first, after all you can buy spare parts for many everyday items directly from the manufacturer or use other comparable offers.

Unfortunately,

Apple does not allow you to buy individual parts of a bundle as spare parts. So you would have to buy a complete set, which is not only very expensive but also anything but environmentally friendly. We can only advise against buying cheap headphones that are supposed to be compatible. The quality cannot keep up with the originals and you will be disappointed. If you just want to replace the headphones, which are quieter, then we offer you the solution.
